CHERP Investigator Honored by National Hispanic Medical Association, 03/26/2009

Sylvia E. Rosas, MD, MSCE, a Core Investigator for CHERP, a Staff Physician and Research Associate at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, was recognized for her leadership in advocacy at local, state and national levels on issues of importance to the health of the Hispanic community by the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). Dr. Rosas received the Leadership Fellow of the Year award at their annual meeting in New York on March 21.
Board certified in internal medicine and nephrology, Dr. Rosas focuses her research on cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease. She is the principal investigator for the VA HSR&D funded study, “Novel Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Renal Insufficiency.” She also recently received NIH funding for her RO1, “Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Chronic Kidney Disease: a CRIC ancillary study.” Dr. Rosas graduated second in her class from the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Bogotá, Colombia, and completed a residency in internal medicine at Michael Reese Hospital/University of Illinois at Chicago. She continued her clinical training with a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She also completed the Wharton Management Program and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Established in 1994 in Washington, DC, NHMA is a nonprofit association that represents licensed Hispanic physicians in the U.S. in its mission to improve health care for Hispanics and the underserved.
