Contact: Christine Weeks

Kevin G. Volpp, MD, PhD, CHERP Investigator and Associate Professor of Medicine and Health Care Systems at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School, was one of 61 researchers elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2008.

The ASCI seeks to advance research that improves knowledge and treatment of human diseases, and to provide mentorship to future generations of physician-scientists. The ASCI is one of the nation's oldest and most respected medical honor societies with a membership that includes physician-scientists from all medical specialties. Members are elected to the Society for their scholarly achievement in biomedical research.

Dr. Volpp's research program focuses on the impact of financial and organizational incentives on health outcomes. Using concepts from behavioral economics, Dr. Volpp has examined the efficacy and cost effectiveness of financial incentives in addressing tobacco dependence, obesity, and medication non-adherence. Dr. Volpp also has used administrative data to examine the health consequences of several major health policy changes. This work includes a body of research examining the impact on patient outcomes of the ACGME regulation of work hours for physicians in training and a number of studies assessing the effects of changes in hospital payment and hospital financial stress on patient outcomes.
