Funding Opportunity: VISN 4 Medical Home Competitive Pilot Program
May 31 Deadline for Applications
The VISN 4 Medical Home Evaluation Center (MHEC) invites applications from VISN 4 investigators for pilot project support from the MHEC Competitive Pilot Program. The VISN 4 MHEC’s mission is to evaluate the effects of the VA Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and concurrently evaluate and improve its implementation. The primary purpose of the VISN 4 MHEC Competitive Pilot Program is to support the implementation and evaluation of focused and innovative pilot interventions designed to advance PCMH goals for selected vulnerable populations.
Pilot proposals must be relevant to advancing the PCMH to improve Veteran health or healthcare. Awards are to be used to support the critical first steps necessary to inform and support the development of full proposals for intramural or extramural funding.
This funding stream is designed to encourage the implementation of innovative interventions with elements of the PCMH. These interventions must target vulnerable populations, as the concepts of the PCMH have the most to offer vulnerable patients. In addition, the PCMH may be most successful if its concepts are tailored to the often unique needs and challenges of vulnerable patients. All implementation pilots must be accompanied by a rigorous evaluation of the effects of the implementation including quantitative studies to establish feasibility and effect, and/or qualitative studies to explore and describe the phenomena of interest. Studies that focus on qualitative or quantitative methodological techniques relevant to PCMH will also be considered.
The deadline for submission of completed applications is May 31, 2010. The proposed project should be completed within 1 to 2 years and not require additional funds, unless those funds are available with certainty. Funding is available at up to $100,000/year. However, exceptions to this $100,000 funding cap will be considered but must be well justified and approved prior to submission.
Applications will be accepted from clinical providers and doctoral level non-clinician investigators with VA appointments in VISN 4. Applicants must be compliant with all VA research regulations (e.g., certification in human subjects protection, data security, and good clinical practices). Fellows and postdoctoral investigators are eligible to apply for funding as a Principal Investigator provided there is clear demonstration of strong collaboration with a VISN 4 investigator. Investigators from underrepresented socio-economic groups are encouraged to apply.
Questions may be directed to Rachel Werner, MD, PhD, Director, VISN 4 MHEC (215-898-9278 or rachel.werner@va.gov) or Judith Long, MD, co-Director VISN 4 MHEC (215-898-4311 or judith.long@va.gov).
