CHERP Investigators Win Presitigious National Awards at SGIM Annual Meeting, 05/03/2010

VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) Investigators Receive National Awards at the Annual Meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM)
Five investigators from the VA Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion received prestigious national awards at the annual meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). The 33rd annual meeting, co-chaired by a CHERP investigator, was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota April 28 – May 1, 2010.
David Asch, MD, MBA, CHERP Director and Robert D. Eilers Professor of Medicine and Health Care Management and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, received the SGIM 2010 John M. Eisenberg Award for Career Achievement in Research, one of SGIM’s highest awards. This award recognizes a senior SGIM member whose innovative research has changed the way we care for patients, conduct research, or educate students, and recognizes career achievement.
Said Ibrahim, MD, MPH, Core Investigator, CHERP, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Associate Chief of Staff for Medicine at Philadelphia VA Medical Center, has been awarded the Herbert W. Nickens Award, which recognizes exceptional commitment to cultural diversity in medicine.
Judith Long, MD, CHERP Core Investigator and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, served as Co-Chair of the national meeting, which is designed to develop the professional skills of academic general internists and others interested in medical education, health care delivery and policy, and clinical general medicine.
Rachel Werner, MD, PhD, Core Investigator, CHERP, Director of the VISN 4 Medical Home Evaluation Center, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, won the Outstanding Junior Investigator Award for her early career achievement and overall body of work which has made a national impact on generalist research.
The Best Paper of the Year Award went to Kevin Volpp, MD, PhD CHERP Core Investigator and Associate Professor of Medicine and Health Care Management at the Wharton School, and his team for: Volpp KG, Troxel AB, Pauly MV, Puig A, Glick H, Asch DA, Galvin R, Zhu J, Wan F, De Guzman J, Corbett E, Weiner J, and Audrain-McGovern J. Joshua Metlay, MD, PhD, CHERP Associate Investigator and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, received the Mid Career Research and Mentorship Award.
The Society for General Internal Medicine was founded in 1978 by a national group of academic general internists committed to promoting research and education aimed at improving healthcare for the whole patient. The organization has grown to nearly 3,000 members over three decades.
